This decadent Imperial Stout, a collaboration between La Pirata and Kees, presents an indulgent sensory profile centered on rich adjunct integration. The experience is dominated by intense natural hazelnut aromas that harmonize with deep layers of cacao and buttery toffee. Dark roasted malts provide a robust foundation of bittersweet chocolate and coffee-like char, which balances the beer's inherent sweetness. At 9% ABV, the alcohol is well-integrated, offering a smooth, background warmth. The result is a complex, dessert-like profile where the nutty sweetness of the hazelnut and the richness of the toffee linger long into a velvety, luscious finish.
Appearance. Opaque jet black (SRM 40+) with a thick, persistent deep tan head. The high viscosity and alcohol content are evident through visible legs on the glass when swirled.
Aroma. High intensity with a primary focus on natural hazelnut and sweet toffee. Supporting notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, and lightly burnt grain provide depth. Low dark fruit esters like raisins are present, alongside a clean, subtle alcohol warmth and very low earthy hop character.
Taste. An initial sweet impression of hazelnut and toffee quickly yields to complex layers of cacao and roasted malt. The mid-palate features bittersweet chocolate and espresso-like roast. Bitterness is moderate to firm, providing enough structure to balance the residual sweetness without becoming harsh. The finish is long and harmonious, featuring lingering nuttiness and a gentle alcoholic warmth.
Mouthfeel. Full to very full-bodied with a chewy, velvety, and luscious texture. Carbonation is moderate. A smooth, pleasant alcohol warmth is present but never sharp or solventy.
