The pour reveals a profound complexity where the robust foundation of roasted malts—evoking bittersweet chocolate and black licorice—intertwines with the rich, woody sweetness of maple and charred oak. Intense aromas of espresso and dark fruits like raisins and prunes transition into a luscious, full-bodied palate. The influence of the barrel provides a velvety texture and a gentle tannin structure, balancing the significant alcohol warmth. It concludes with a long, warming finish where residual maple sweetness harmonizes with a firm, roasty bitterness.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (40+ SRM). It features a persistent, dense, deep tan head with moderate retention and visible legs indicating high viscosity and alcohol concentration.
Aroma. High intensity; deep layers of roasted coffee, dark cocoa, and toasted grain are complemented by distinct maple syrup sweetness and vanilla-scented oak. Subtle esters of dried plums and raisins emerge as it warms, alongside a clean, sophisticated alcohol presence and very low earthy hop notes.
Taste. Initial impression of rich, bittersweet chocolate and molasses. The maple syrup barrel maturation imparts a decadent sweetness that balances aggressive roasted grain flavors and firm hop bitterness. Complex notes of black licorice and charred wood provide depth, leading to a lingering finish of dark fruit, oak tannins, and smooth malt warmth.
Mouthfeel. Full to very full-bodied with a luscious, chewy, and velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate-low. A significant but well-integrated alcohol warmth is noticeable without being sharp or solventy.
