Heks is a monolithic Baltic Porter that pushes the boundaries of the style with its triple-mash construction and imposing 13% alcohol. This collaboration between La Débauche and Moersleutel delivers a dense sensory experience where the classic Munich malt profile is amplified into layers of molasses, licorice, and deep toast. The aroma and palate yield a rich, syrupy depth reminiscent of dark chocolate and dried plums. Despite its massive strength, it maintains the characteristic smoothness of the style, eschewing burnt harshness for a velvety, vinous complexity. Notes of black currant and prune emerge through the intense, warming finish, reflecting a masterful integration of high-gravity brewing.
Appearance. Opaque dark brown, nearly black in the glass with deep garnet highlights at the edges. Topped with a thick, persistent, tan-colored head that leaves oily legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with rich maltiness featuring deep toast, molasses, and dark chocolate. A complex ester profile provides notes of prunes, raisins, and dried cherries, complemented by a prominent vinous, Port-like alcohol character. No hop aroma.
Taste. Initial impression is richly malty and sweet, quickly transitioning into complex layers of licorice, toffee, and nutty Munich malt flavors. A smooth, Schwarzbier-like roasted character provides chocolate and coffee notes without burnt acridity. Low spicy hop flavor is present. The finish is long and warming, balancing malt sweetness with a dryish, roasted aftertaste and dark fruit esters.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and viscous with a smooth, velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate, providing enough lift to prevent the beer from feeling heavy. Significant but well-integrated alcohol warmth is present throughout.
