La Débauche Amorena (2019)
This 2019 vintage Imperial Stout presents a decadent tapestry of dark, roasted intensity and lush fruit. Bold notes of Amarena cherries and bright raspberries intertwine with the deep bittersweet chocolate and espresso character of the roasted malts. The addition of marzipan lends a sophisticated nutty sweetness, reminiscent of almond paste, which complements the subtle oak and vinous notes derived from extended barrel aging. At 14% ABV, it is exceptionally warming and viscous, offering a complex interplay between tart red fruit acidity and a rich, velvety malt backbone, finishing with a lingering, dark fruit elegance.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (SRM 40+). It features a deep tan head with low to moderate retention, leaving thick, viscous legs on the glass as it is swirled.
Aroma. High intensity with a rich blend of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and roasted grain. Pronounced notes of dark Amarena cherries and tart raspberries are layered over a distinct almond-like marzipan sweetness. Subtle oak, vanilla, and vinous qualities from barrel aging are present, alongside a noticeable but smooth alcohol warmth.
Taste. An intense initial impression of dark chocolate and roasted malts, quickly followed by the concentrated sweetness of Amarena cherries and the bright acidity of raspberries. The marzipan adds a nutty, dessert-like complexity. Firm bitterness provides balance against the high residual sweetness and fruit sugars. The finish is long and warming with lingering notes of dark fruit, charred oak, and cocoa.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied, thick, and chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present, consistent with its high strength.
