Imperio is a refined Baltic Porter that expertly balances depth with high drinkability. This bottom-fermented lager showcases a rich tapestry of deep toast, dark chocolate, and licorice, accented by a deliberate, subtle wisp of beechwood-like smoke that sharpens the sensory profile without overwhelming the malt. Layers of dark dried fruits—reminiscent of plums and raisins—emerge from the complex malt base, while the clean lager fermentation ensures a smooth, non-cloying character. Despite its 7% ABV, the beer remains remarkably approachable, offering a sophisticated interplay between roasted coffee notes and a soft, warming finish. It is a masterful interpretation of the dark side, merging the richness of a porter with the clean precision of a cold-fermented lager.
Appearance. Deep reddish-copper to opaque dark brown (SRM 28) with a thick, persistent, creamy tan head and excellent lacing. The beer is clear, though its depth of color makes it appear nearly opaque.
Aroma. High intensity with a rich maltiness featuring notes of caramel, deep toast, and dark chocolate. A complex ester profile provides scents of prunes, raisins, and dried cherries. A very subtle, clean smoky note is present, complementing the deep malt accents without any burnt or acrid aromas. No hop aroma; clean fermentation profile.
Taste. Initial malty sweetness gives way to complex layers of molasses, licorice, and nutty depth. A prominent yet smooth Schwarzbier-like roasted flavor persists, reminiscent of cold-brew coffee but stopping well short of burnt. Low spicy hop flavor provides minor support to a medium-low bitterness. The finish is dryish and smooth, leaving a lingering aftertaste of dark fruit and a hint of wood smoke.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, velvety texture. Medium-high carbonation provides a mouth-filling sensation that prevents the beer from feeling heavy on the tongue. Light, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present but deceptive.
