This historically-inspired Foreign Extra Stout, a collaboration between Kirkstall and Five Points, offers a deep sensory journey back to the 1930s. The profile is anchored by a complex malt base, delivering rich notes of biscuity grain and indulgent cinder toffee. A significant addition of Challenger hops provides a firm, herbal counterpoint to the dark sugars, ensuring a balanced and drinkable character. Despite its sessionable strength, it retains the roasted intensity expected of the style, blending smooth chocolate undertones with a subtle, earthy hop presence that lingers pleasantly through the finish.
Appearance. Very deep brown to nearly black (35 SRM); opaque. Thick, creamy tan head with excellent retention and dense lacing.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity featuring roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Pronounced notes of cinder toffee and biscuity malt are complemented by a low herbal, earthy hop character from the Challenger hops. Light dark fruit esters.
Taste. Initial flavors of roasted grain and burnt sugar lead into a mid-palate of cinder toffee and biscuity malt. Medium-high bitterness from the Challenger hops balances the rich malt profile. Finishes moderately dry with a lingering roasted coffee and earthy hop aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, creamy character. Moderate to low carbonation consistent with cask conditioning. Very low alcohol warmth.
