This bold Black IPA balances the aggression of its name with surprising floral elegance. Browar Kingpin utilizes dark malts to provide a silky chocolate foundation that avoids harsh roasted astringency or burnt char. Robust American hops drive a pungent resinous and citrusy bitterness, which is artfully softened by the addition of sweet orange peel. Distinctive botanical layers of heather and jasmine offer a sophisticated floral perfume that weaves through the piney hop character. The result is a complex, medium-bodied ale where the dark, toasted grains and vibrant New World hops find harmony amidst a lingering, herbal-floral finish.
Appearance. Opaque black color (SRM 38) with a moderate, persistent light tan head that leaves fine lacing on the glass. Clear but appears nearly opaque due to the depth of color.
Aroma. High intensity aroma featuring prominent resinous pine and grapefruit citrus from American hops. A supportive malt backdrop offers notes of light chocolate and toasted bread. Distinctive floral notes of jasmine and earthy heather are clearly present, complemented by a subtle, sweet orange zest character. Fermentation is clean with no significant esters.
Taste. The initial impression is hop-forward with firm bitterness balanced by a smooth, medium-low malt flavor of milk chocolate and cocoa. Hop flavors mirror the aroma with pine and citrus resin. The heather and jasmine provide an herbal, floral complexity that rounds out the mid-palate alongside the sweet orange peel. Finishes dry and slightly off-dry with a lingering, clean bitterness and a faint toasted grain aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, silky texture from the debittered roasted malts. Moderate carbonation provides a pleasant prickle on the tongue. A light, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, with very low astringency.
