Kettlehead Brewing’s 1.101 (2023) is a formidable Anniversary Double IPA that pushes the style’s boundaries with a potent 12.5% ABV. This massive ale showcases a complex hop tapestry, where the bright grapefruit and lime of Citra meld with the piney, resinous depth of Simcoe. Eureka adds a dank, herbal intensity, while Idaho 7 contributes layers of overripe tropical fruit and apricot. Despite its immense strength, the beer remains impressively approachable, balancing aggressive bitterness against a lean, neutral malt backbone. It delivers an assertive, saturating hop experience with a clean finish and a refined, warming presence.

Appearance. Deep gold to pale orange (8-10 SRM) with a slight hop-induced haze. Pours with a dense, persistent off-white head that leaves significant lacing on the glass.

Aroma. Intense and layered hop profile featuring pungent citrus, resinous pine, and tropical notes of mango and pineapple. Light herbal dankness is present, supported by a very low, neutral grainy malt character. A clean, warming alcohol note is detectable but well-integrated.

Taste. A massive hop explosion leads with flavors of grapefruit, spruce, and sticky resin, followed by stone fruit and tropical berries. Bitterness is very high and assertive but lacks harshness, balanced by a soft, supportive malt character that quickly gives way to a medium-dry, lingering hoppy finish.

Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate, providing a slight lift to the palate. A significant but smooth alcohol warmth is present, consistent with its high strength, without being solventy.
