This English Porter presents a refined sensory balance, led by the heritage character of Maris Otter malts which provide a sturdy bready and biscuity foundation. Complex layers of sweetness emerge from the Crystal and Special Cara Negra malts, offering notes of toffee and dark fruit, while Pale Chocolate malt introduces a smooth, non-astringent cocoa roastiness. The addition of Fuggles hops anchors the profile with a traditional earthy and slightly woody counterpoint. Dark and inviting, it strikes a harmonious chord between malt-driven richness and a clean, approachable finish, capturing the classic, approachable spirit of the style without any harsh burnt notes.
Appearance. Dark brown with deep ruby highlights (SRM 25-30); moderate light tan head with fair to good retention; clear to slightly opaque brilliance.
Aroma. Moderate intensity featuring toasty and biscuity malt from the Maris Otter base, complemented by milk chocolate and soft caramel notes. A mild earthy and woody hop character from the Fuggles is present, alongside very subtle dark fruit esters.
Taste. Initial bready and nutty malt sweetness followed by flavors of toffee and milk chocolate. The roast is gentle and refined, avoiding any burnt or acrid tones. Low to moderate bitterness provides balance, carrying an earthy hop flavor into a slightly sweet, clean finish with lingering cocoa notes.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, light creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate, and at 4.8% ABV, the alcohol provides only a very faint, well-integrated warmth without any astringency.
