This buckwheat-driven Altbier offers a unique twist on the traditional style. Despite its lower alcohol content, it presents a rich amber hue and a distinctive aromatic profile where the floury, sweetish character of unmalted buckwheat from La Garrotxa meets the bright, zesty lift of orange peel and coriander. The malt backbone remains toasty and bread-like, though the usual firm bitterness of an Altbier is softened by the earthy, grain-forward notes of the buckwheat. It finishes dry and clean, retaining a traditional top-fermentation character while showcasing the artisanal, unfiltered texture and cloudy appearance of this regional grain-based ale.
Appearance.Amber to deep copper (SRM 12-16); thick, creamy off-white head with moderate retention; hazy to cloudy appearance with noticeable sediment due to being unfiltered.
Aroma.Moderate intensity; rich maltiness featuring baked bread and toasted crusts; prominent earthy and floury notes from the buckwheat; subtle citrus from orange peel and a light spicy, herbal lift from coriander; very clean fermentation with low floral hops.
Taste.Initial impression is grainy and slightly sweet; malt flavors of toasted bread and nuts are balanced by a rustic, floury buckwheat character; faint citrus and spice notes from the adjuncts appear mid-palate; low hop bitterness (approx. 20-25 IBU context); clean fermentation; finishes dry with a lingering grainy aftertaste.
Mouthfeel.Medium-light body; smooth but with a slight grain-textured mouth-coating from the unmalted buckwheat; moderate to high carbonation; no alcohol warmth; low astringency.
