Kaapse Brouwers Kaapse Mark-Ari
Kaapse Mark-Ari is an evolving Brett Beer that bridges the gap between a traditional Belgian Blond Ale and a rustic wild ale. Fermented initially with Orval yeast, it undergoes a secondary transformation in the bottle via Brettanomyces. The result is a highly expressive profile where initial notes of pear, apricot, and honeyed malt give way to a distinctive funky twist. As the Brettanomyces consumes residual sugars, the beer develops layers of wet hay, leather, and tropical pineapple. This easygoing yet complex blond beer remains impeccably dry and effervescent, showcasing a masterful balance between Belgian spicy phenols and wild, earthy depth.
Appearance. Pours a deep golden to pale amber (SRM 5-7) with a slight haze from bottle conditioning. Topped by a dense, rocky white head with excellent persistence and intricate lacing.
Aroma. High intensity featuring a complex blend of tropical fruit (pineapple, mango) and stone fruit (apricot). Notable spicy phenols like clove and white pepper from the Orval yeast are complemented by evolving Brettanomyces funk, suggesting wet hay and a mild barnyard earthiness. A light, crackery malt backbone remains in the background.
Taste. Begins with a crisp, dry impression of bready malt and honey. The mid-palate is dominated by fruity esters of pear and apple, followed by an increasing rustic complexity of leather and earthy funk. Hop bitterness is moderate and herbal, providing a clean counterpoint to the fruit. The finish is exceptionally dry and sparkling with a lingering peppery aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with a very high, effervescent carbonation that creates a prickly, refreshing sensation. Very low alcohol warmth is present, with no astringency and a crisp, lean texture due to high attenuation.

Mark Ari ’22 is het bewaarbier van Kaapse Brouwers. Vernoemd naar Marcus Aurelius, een groot filosoof en gebrouwen ter ere van de geboorte van de zoon van een de eigenaren van de brouwerij. Mark Ari is een lekker doordrinkbaar blond bier waaraan wilde gist en suiker zijn toegevoegd. Een jaar geleden kwam het op de markt, met de bedoeling om het een jaar weg te zetten. Dat heb ik dus braaf gedaan. Na een jaar eenzame opsluiting in het donker, is het nu tijd ‘to unleash the beast’.
