This Double Black Farmhouse IPA presents a complex, shadowy profile where dark malts meet vibrant hop saturation. Pouring an opaque deep brown, it bridges the gap between a robust porter and a sharp American IPA. The nose is an assertive blend of resinous pine and tropical fruit, underscored by a subtle, spicy farmhouse yeast character. On the palate, restrained chocolate and toasted notes from debittered roast malts provide a smooth foundation for aggressive hop bitterness. The 8.5% ABV adds a gentle warmth that complements the dry, peppery finish typical of a farmhouse fermentation, making for a bold yet surprisingly drinkable experience.
Appearance. Opaque deep brown to black (SRM 38). Clear at the edges with mahogany highlights. Dense, persistent tan head with excellent lacing.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring resinous pine, grapefruit, and hints of tropical melon. Background malt notes of light chocolate and toast. Notable spicy, peppery yeast esters with a clean fermentation profile despite the farmhouse complexity.
Taste. High hop bitterness is immediate, featuring flavors of citrus zest and pine. Malt character is supportive but restrained, offering cocoa and light coffee without acrid or burnt qualities. The farmhouse yeast contributes a dry, earthy spiciness. Finish is very dry with a lingering hop resin and mild roast aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, velvety texture. Moderate carbonation. Noticeable alcohol warmth that remains well-integrated. No malt-derived astringency.
