Jopen What About Breakfast? - Barrel Aged

Stout 11 º
This opulent Barrel-Aged Coffee Stout presents an intricate layer of sensory indulgence, defined by its 376-day maturation in Port Dundas and Invergordon Single Grain Whisky barrels. The profile is dominated by bold, freshly roasted coffee and rich cocoa, interwoven with delicate honey sweetness and prominent vanilla from the oak. As the liquid warms, notes of red fruits, specifically tart cherry, emerge against a sturdy backdrop of toasted wood and dark grain. The high alcohol content is masterfully integrated, offering a smooth, warming sensation that carries decadent flavors of espresso and dark chocolate through a long, luxurious, and velvety finish.
Appearance. Opaque, jet black (40+ SRM). Crowned by a thick, creamy, mocha-colored head with excellent retention and fine, dense lacing.
Aroma. High intensity. Dominant aromas of freshly ground coffee and dark cocoa are layered over a rich, roasted malt base. The barrel aging contributes distinct vanilla, toasted oak, and smooth grain whisky notes. Subtle honey sweetness and moderate red fruit esters, reminiscent of cherries, add complexity. Low hop aroma.
Taste. Initial impression is sweet and rich, quickly followed by bold espresso and bittersweet chocolate. The malt profile features deep roasted grains and caramel. Port Dundas and Invergordon barrel influences provide smooth whisky character, vanilla, and charred wood. A noticeable cherry-like fruitiness balances the honeyed sweetness. Bitterness is moderate, derived primarily from roasted malts and coffee rather than hops. The finish is long and warming with lingering notes of vanilla and cold-brew coffee.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and viscous with a velvety, coating texture. Carbonation is moderate-low, enhancing the creaminess. Significant alcohol warmth is present but remains smooth and well-integrated, lacking any harsh fusel edges. Minimal astringency despite the heavy roast and coffee additions.
