This deceptive Black Double IPA presents a striking sensory contrast, cloaking a massive hop profile within a deep, obsidian body. While it visually mimics a stout, the aromatics are dominated by intense hop notes of resinous pine, sharp grapefruit, and tropical mango. A subtle undercurrent of toasted bread and dark cocoa provides a crisp malt foundation without the heavy sweetness or viscosity of a stout. On the palate, a piercing bitterness cuts through light roasted flavors, finishing exceptionally dry and clean. It is a bold, high-gravity ale that prioritizes hop intensity and drinkability over malt weight, successfully delivering a Double IPA experience in a dark format.

Appearance. Deep black (35-40 SRM) and opaque. Pours with a dense, persistent, creamy tan head that leaves significant lacing on the glass.

Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring prominent notes of resinous pine, zesty citrus peel, and overripe tropical fruit. Supportive background notes of light roast, cocoa, and toasted grain are present but secondary. Fermentation is clean with very low fruity esters and a hint of smooth, integrated alcohol.

Taste. Initial hop-forward punch of grapefruit and pine resin. A moderate toasted malt character provides a slight chocolate and coffee edge without being acrid or burnt. Bitterness is high and firm, supported by a medium-dry finish that avoids any cloying sweetness. The aftertaste is lingeringly hoppy and bitter with a clean, slight alcohol warmth.

Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate. It lacks harsh hop-derived astringency, though a light, pleasant warmth from the alcohol is noticeable.
