Jester King Gotlandsdricka is a rustic, evocative Classic Style Smoked Beer inspired by ancient Viking farmhouse traditions. The sensory experience is defined by a prominent, campfire-like smoke character balanced against the spicy, grainy notes of rye flakes. Juniper berries provide a sharp, resinous evergreen touch, while sweet gale adds a distinct herbal depth. Jester King’s signature fermentation style introduces a subtle, earthy complexity. This unfiltered ale presents a complex weave of smoldering wood, peppery spice, and botanical bitterness, finishing dry and atmospheric, capturing the wild, historical essence of the island of Gotland.

Appearance. Deep amber to copper (12–18 SRM) with a persistent haze due to its unfiltered nature. Topped by a dense, cream-colored head with moderate retention and fine-beaded lacing.

Aroma. High intensity. Assertive wood smoke dominates initially, followed by the resinous, piney aroma of juniper berries and the herbal, slightly medicinal scent of sweet gale. The malt profile is rustic and grainy with a hint of peppery rye. Low earthy phenols and spicy fermentation notes contribute to a savory, complex bouquet.

Taste. The initial impression is savory and smoky, reminiscent of hardwood embers. A bready, spicy malt backbone from the rye flakes supports the intense botanical flavors of juniper and sweet gale. Hop bitterness is moderate, but the combination of wood smoke and botanicals provides a firm, perceived dryness. The finish is lingering and earthy with a clean, smoldering wood aftertaste.

Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a pleasant silkiness from the rye flakes. Carbonation is moderate to high, providing a lively, effervescent mouthfeel. There is a light, well-integrated alcohol warmth and a very faint, pleasant botanical astringency.

Gotlandsdricka, meaning "Drink of Gotland", is a farmhouse ale brewed with smoked malt, juniper, and myrica gale. It's inspired by the Scandanavian farmhouse brewing tradition. Gontlandsdricka is fabled to be the beer of the Vikings. Rudimentary malting techniques would likely have lent a smokey character to the beer and other plants besides hops (such as juniper and gale) were used for bittering. Jester King Gotlandsdricka was fermented in stainless steel with our mixed culture of brewers yeast and wild yeast. It was naturally conditioned in kegs and bottles.
