J. Wakefield Brewing Double Barrel Pankakke

This decadent Imperial Stout presents a masterful integration of breakfast-inspired adjuncts and sophisticated barrel aging. A massive sensory profile unfolds with the distinct, creamy luxury of Madagascar Vanilla and the warming, woody spice of Cinnamon. The double-barrel treatment provides a complex contrast between the caramel-heavy notes of Old Forester Birthday Bourbon and the spicy, peppery kick of Buffalo Trace Rye. Rich Maple Syrup weaves throughout, providing an earthy, velvety sweetness that balances the deep-roast espresso and bittersweet chocolate base. This 13% ABV beer is viscous and warming, offering a harmonious, dessert-like experience that echoes a stack of spice-dusted pancakes.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40+ SRM). It pours with a dense, dark tan head that shows moderate retention, eventually receding to a thick collar. High viscosity is evident through heavy legs that cling to the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a layered bouquet of charred oak, dark chocolate, and roasted coffee. The Madagascar Vanilla contributes a rich, pod-like sweetness, while the Cinnamon adds a distinct, warm spice. Prominent barrel character features bourbon-soaked oak, vanilla, and spicy rye. Esters of dried plums and figs are subtle beneath the heavy syrup and spirit notes.
Taste. An initial explosion of bittersweet cocoa and espresso-like roast. The mid-palate is dominated by the earthy sweetness of Maple Syrup and creamy vanilla. Cinnamon provides a lingering, pleasant heat that complements the Buffalo Trace Rye spice. Bitterness is moderate but firm enough to prevent the sweetness from becoming cloying. The finish is long and indulgent, featuring notes of toasted oak and bourbon-soaked fruit.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied and viscous with a chewy, luscious, and velvety texture. Carbonation is low, enhancing the beer's weight. A significant but smooth alcohol warmth is present, providing a comforting glow without any harsh or solventy edges.
