Maelstrom is a decadent Imperial Stout that commands attention with its massive, velvety presence. At 11.8% ABV, it offers a deep, integrated warmth that carries layers of luxurious intensity. Aromas of roasted cacao and charred grain lead into a palate defined by the sophisticated addition of vanilla pods and aromatic tonka beans. These specialty ingredients weave together to create a complex profile of dark chocolate, spiced almond, and creamy sweetness. The texture is exceptionally lush and thick, bridging the gap between burnt malt bitterness and a lingering, fudge-like finish. It is a harmonious, powerful expression of darkness and spice.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (40 SRM). Pours with a thick, deep tan head that shows moderate retention and leaves oily legs on the glass, indicative of high viscosity and alcohol.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex blend of bittersweet chocolate and roasted cacao. Strong notes of vanilla and the spiced almond character of tonka beans meld with underlying scents of coffee, dark fruit esters like raisins, and a smooth, clean alcohol warmth.
Taste. Initial impression is rich and syrupy, dominated by dark chocolate, roasted grain, and burnt sugar. The vanilla pods provide a creamy mid-palate, while the tonka beans add layers of cinnamon and sandalwood. Medium-high bitterness provides essential balance against the decadent malt sweetness. The finish is long and warming with a lingering aftertaste of cocoa and toasted oak.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and chewy with a very luscious, velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A smooth, noticeable alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated, avoiding any harsh or solventy edges.
