Drinking Crayons is a vibrant Double IPA defined by its intense tropical and citrus profile. A complex blend of El Dorado, Amarillo, and Columbus hops provides a foundation of tangerine, lemon, and melon, while a massive dry-hop addition of Azacca, Amarillo, Columbus, and Lupulin Mosaic introduces layers of mango and apricot. The inclusion of heavy wheat and oats creates a soft, pillowy texture that carries the bold hop flavors. A subtle undercurrent of Columbus-driven dankness and pine adds depth, balancing the bright fruit notes. Despite its 7.9% ABV, it maintains a smooth, approachable character with a clean, hop-forward finish typical of modern strong ales.
Appearance. Gold to light orange (7-9 SRM) with a thick, persistent white foam head and significant lacing. Clarity is hazy to opaque due to the heavy wheat and oat grist.
Aroma. High intensity hop character featuring prominent notes of tangerine, lemon, and mango. Secondary aromas of apricot and melon are supported by a light resinous dankness and pine. Malt presence is low and grainy, providing a clean, wheaty backdrop. Fermentation is clean with neutral yeast character.
Taste. Initial hop-forward impression of ripe stone fruit and citrus. Malt flavor is low and supportive with soft wheat and oat notes. Hop flavors of mango, apricot, and tangerine dominate. Moderately high bitterness is firm but smooth. Finishes medium-dry with a lingering piney and fruity aftertaste. Balanced toward hops throughout.
