Shot in the Dark is a robust Specialty IPA that bridges the gap between resinous hop punch and autumnal malt depth. A powerful kettle presence of Chinook hops delivers assertive notes of pine and resin, while a generous dry-hopping of Cascade introduces bright citrus and grapefruit zest. Beneath this hop-forward profile lies a foundation of roasted malt and caramel, offering hints of chocolate and toffee without overwhelming the palate. The balance is firmly bitter yet smooth, showcasing a clean fermentation and a drying, slightly roasted finish. This collaboration captures a complex harmony of American hop intensity and supportive, toasty malt character.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark brown (SRM 28-32) with brilliant clarity and ruby highlights. It is topped by a persistent, light tan, creamy head that leaves decorative lacing.
Aroma. Moderate-high hop intensity featuring resinous pine, spicy grapefruit, and floral citrus. The malt profile provides a supportive background of toasted bread, caramel, and a hint of dark chocolate. Fermentation is clean with no noticeable esters.
Taste. Initial hop-forward impact of pine and grapefruit zest. The mid-palate transitions into toasted malt and caramel sweetness, countered by a firm, medium-high bitterness. Low roasted malt flavors of cocoa and nuts emerge toward the end. The finish is dry and clean with a lingering, non-harsh hop bitterness and a faint roasted grain character.
