Black Box is a vibrant Wild Specialty Beer that showcases a massive addition of blueberry and blackberry against a sharp, acidic backdrop. The appearance is striking, with a deep purple hue and a stained pink head. Aromatically, the beer leads with intense jammy dark fruit and a subtle, rustic citrus note derived from the Kveik yeast fermentation. On the palate, the experience is defined by a puckering, lactic sourness that provides a refreshing brightness to the earthy berry flavors. Despite the intense fruit profile, the finish remains bone-dry and highly carbonated, making for an incredibly drinkable and fruit-forward sour ale.
Appearance. Deep purple to magenta in color with a dense, pinkish-purple head that shows moderate retention. The clarity is opaque, heavily influenced by the high volume of fruit solids and yeast haze.
Aroma. High intensity of jammy blackberry and earthy blueberry. A clean but distinct fermentation character from the Kveik yeast provides subtle orange peel and rustic esters. Lactic acidity is sharp and prominent, with virtually no hop or malt aroma present.
Taste. Initial impression is sharply acidic and intensely fruity. The flavors of tart blackberry and juicy blueberry dominate, supported by a very low cracker-like malt presence. Bitterness is negligible, as the balance is heavily shifted toward acidity. The finish is very dry and crisp, with a lingering tartness and a clean aftertaste of berry skins.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with high, spritzy carbonation that enhances the perception of acidity. There is no alcohol warmth. A slight tannic astringency from the berry skins adds a delicate structure to the mouthfeel without being harsh.
