HopSaSam O.P.A. is a robust, modern evolution of the Belgian Pale Ale, distinguished by its 7.5% ABV and a contemporary hop profile. The focal point is an intense dry-hopping with Amarillo hops, which introduces vibrant aromatic layers of grapefruit, orange zest, and stone fruit like apricot. This citrus brightness weaves through a sturdy foundation of bready and biscuity malts, punctuated by traditional Belgian yeast esters of pear and red apple. While maintaining the style's classic drinkability, this triple-hopped rendition offers a more assertive bitterness and a warming finish that balances its rich, dark blonde malt character and spicy floral nuances.
Appearance. Deep gold to dark blonde in color (SRM 7-9). Features a thick, creamy, rocky white head with excellent retention and significant lacing. Clarity is very good, showing a brilliant sparkle despite the heavy dry-hopping.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma dominated by Amarillo's citrus and floral notes, specifically grapefruit and orange peel. This is supported by a moderate bready and lightly honeyed malt character. Esters are moderate, suggesting pear and apple, with a very low, subtle peppery phenol presence in the background.
Taste. Initial impression is a soft, bready malt sweetness followed quickly by a wave of citrusy hop flavors. The Amarillo hops provide distinct notes of orange and grapefruit. Bitterness is medium-high, which is firmer than the style baseline, providing a crisp counterpoint to the biscuity malt. The finish is balanced to dry, with a lingering citrus and spicy hop aftertaste. Fermentation character is clean but distinctly Belgian with light fruity esters.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy palate. Carbonation is medium-high, providing a lively effervescence. A noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, consistent with its 7.5% strength, without being harsh or fusel.
