Hophead Brewing Witch Hunt
At a potent 12% ABV, Witch Hunt is a formidable Imperial Stout that commands attention with a profile that is both unapologetic and complex. The sensory experience is defined by its extensive maturation in Heaven Hill barrels, which imparts deep layers of charred oak, spicy bourbon, and rich caramel. The addition of vanilla softens the intense roasted profile of dark chocolate and espresso, creating a decadent, velvety texture. Deep notes of black cherry and raisin emerge alongside a smooth, atomic alcohol warmth. This is a bold beer where the sweetness of the vanilla and the spirit-forward barrel character harmonize perfectly with a firm, roasty backbone.
Appearance. SRM 40+; jet black and completely opaque. It pours with a thick, dense, dark tan head with moderate retention. Noticeable viscosity and high alcohol content are evident as legs clinging to the side of the glass.
Aroma. High intensity; a rich blend of bittersweet chocolate, roasted coffee beans, and black licorice. The barrel aging contributes prominent aromas of bourbon, toasted oak, and marshmallow. High vanilla sweetness is present, mingling with dark fruit esters of prune and dried fig.
Taste. An initial impression of intense dark chocolate and roasted grain is quickly joined by smooth bourbon and oak tannins. Medium-high bitterness is balanced by a significant residual sweetness from the vanilla and malt. Flavors of molasses and espresso linger into a warming, velvety finish with a touch of vinous complexity.
Mouthfeel. Full to very full-bodied with a chewy, luscious, and velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant but smooth alcohol warmth is present, reflecting its high gravity without being sharp or solventy.
