This decadent Imperial Stout, aged for thirteen months in Bourbon barrels, presents a masterclass in dark complexity. The choice of Kveik Voss yeast introduces distinctive fruity peaks that amplify the jammy, tart essence of black currants. Aromatically, the beer is dominated by rich molasses and dark chocolate, layered with heavy caramel and the unmistakable influence of strong oak. On the palate, the vanilla and bourbon-soaked wood notes provide a luxurious counterpoint to the roasted malt bitterness. The result is a harmonious, deeply layered profile where the high alcohol is seamlessly integrated into a velvety, enduring finish of dark fruit and toasted grain.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (SRM 40+). Pours with a thick, dense, dark tan head with moderate retention and significant lacing. High viscosity is evidenced by visible legs when swirled.
Aroma. High intensity and deeply complex. Pronounced notes of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and molasses are intertwined with a significant bourbon character, showing strong oak and vanilla. The black currants provide a sharp, dark fruit ester profile alongside subtle earthy hops and a hint of spicy alcohol.
Taste. Initial impression is intensely rich and bittersweet. Deep roasted malt flavors of cocoa and charred grain meld with sweet caramel and molasses. The mid-palate features the tart, jammy tang of black currants and subtle fruity esters from the Kveik Voss yeast. The finish is long and warming, dominated by oak tannins, vanilla, and a firm but supportive bitterness that prevents a cloying aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A smooth, noticeable alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated, accompanied by a light, structured oak astringency.
