Sungazing is a vibrant American IPA that leans into a bright, crispy profile using a lean malt base of Extra Pale Pilsner and Heidelberg malts. The hop bill—featuring Simcoe, Comet, HBC 586, and Strata—erupts with a complex blend of resinous pine, zesty grapefruit, and tropical passion fruit, further heightened by the addition of orange peel. Carapils ensures a delicate body that allows the assertive bitterness to remain clean and refreshing. Fermented with WLP001, the profile is exceptionally clean, focusing purely on the interplay between citrus zest and dank, herbal hop oils, finishing with a bone-dry, lingering bitterness.
Appearance.Medium gold with bright orange hues (7 SRM). Brilliant clarity with a medium-sized, white, persistent head that leaves fine lacing on the glass.
Aroma.High intensity hop-forward aroma featuring prominent resinous pine, grapefruit, and tangerine from the orange peel and Comet hops. Underlying notes of passion fruit and mango from Strata and HBC 586 are supported by a very low, clean, grainy malt character.
Taste.Initial impression is hop-centric with grapefruit zest and herbal resin. The malt flavor is low and crackery, providing a lean foundation for the medium-high bitterness. Layers of tropical melon and berry emerge mid-palate, leading to a dry, crisp finish with a lingering hoppy aftertaste. Clean fermentation with no esters.
Mouthfeel.Medium-light body with a smooth, crisp texture. Carbonation is medium-high, providing a lively mouthfeel. Alcohol warmth is very light and well-integrated. No hop astringency.
