Hop Hooligans Imperial Chupacabra 2024
This Imperial Stout is a decadent, high-gravity beast built on a robust foundation of Golden Promise and Roasted Barley. The sensory profile is an intricate tapestry of dark chocolate and espresso, driven by Cocoa Nibs, Coffee, and a complex specialty malt bill including Crystal Extra Dark, T50, and DRC. Aromas of Madagascar and Uganda Vanilla provide a sweet counterpoint to the warming, earthy spice of C5 Alba Cinnamon and Nutmeg. A lingering, smoldering heat from Chipotle and Habanero peppers emerges on the finish, expertly balanced by the velvety, oat-heavy body and a clean fermentation profile from WLP001 yeast.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (40+ SRM). Pours with a dense, persistent, deep tan head that leaves thick lacing on the glass. High viscosity is evident through visible legs when swirled.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex blend of roasted grains, bittersweet chocolate, and fresh-ground coffee. Notable spicy accents of cinnamon and nutmeg mingle with rich, floral vanilla. Very low earthy hop notes are overshadowed by a subtle smoky pepper character and a hint of dark fruit esters like raisins and prunes.
Taste. Initial impression is intensely rich and bittersweet. Deep roasted malt and charred grain flavors are layered with cocoa and espresso. Mid-palate reveals caramel sweetness and spicy complexity from the cinnamon and nutmeg. The finish is long and warming, featuring a slow-building capsaicin heat from chipotle and habanero that balances the residual sweetness without being harsh. No significant hop flavor is present, allowing the adjuncts to shine.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and viscous with a chewy, velvety texture provided by oat flakes and oat malt. Low to moderate carbonation. Significant but smooth alcohol warmth is present, complemented by a light, pleasant tingling from the chili peppers.
