Hop Federation Red IPA
This Red IPA presents a striking visual inspired by the deep copper and ruby plumage of the kaka. An exuberant aromatic profile leads with high-intensity notes of tart ruby grapefruit, ripe forest berries, and tropical passionfruit, characteristic of New World hops. Beneath the hop-forward attack lies a comforting and robust toasty malt backbone, providing necessary structure without cloying sweetness. On the palate, the interplay of citrus zest and dark fruit is balanced by a firm bitterness and a toasted bread complexity. The 6.4% ABV adds a gentle warmth, culminating in a clean, sustained finish that remains satisfyingly hop-centric and remarkably well-balanced.
Appearance. Deep copper to reddish-amber with distinct ruby highlights (14-17 SRM). Clear with a moderate, persistent light tan head that leaves consistent lacing.
Aroma. High hop aroma featuring prominent ruby grapefruit, mixed berries, and passionfruit. Moderate malt character with toasty and bready notes and a hint of caramel sweetness. Clean fermentation profile with very low fruity esters.
Taste. Initial impression is hop-forward with tart grapefruit and tropical fruit flavors. The mid-palate reveals a supportive, medium-low toasty malt flavor with light biscuit notes. Medium-high bitterness provides a firm balance. The finish is slightly off-dry to dry, featuring a lingering toasty and resinous aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Moderate carbonation. Light, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present but not harsh.
