Holy Mountain Brewing Black Beer

Dark Ale 4.5 º
Holy Mountain Brewing’s Black Beer is a nuanced expression of the British Brown Ale style, balancing sessionable drinkability with layered malt complexity. It presents an inviting aroma of toasted Maris Otter malt, rich toffee, and a distinct nuttiness. Hints of light Chocolate malt provide sensory depth and a touch of cocoa without venturing into the roasted territory of a porter. The palate is defined by biscuity sweetness and caramel, supported by a gentle earthy bitterness from traditional English hops. A clean, medium-light body and moderate carbonation ensure a crisp, dry finish, making this an elevated, flavorful take on the traditional brown ale.
Appearance. Dark reddish-brown (approximately 20 SRM) with brilliant clarity. Features a moderate, creamy, light tan head with good retention and fine-beaded lacing.
Aroma. Moderate intensity with sweet malt characters of toffee, toasted hazelnut, and soft milk chocolate. A subtle fruity ester profile suggesting dried plum is present, alongside a low, earthy and floral hop aroma.
Taste. Initial malt-focused impression featuring toasted biscuit, caramel, and light cocoa, followed by a nutty mid-palate. Hop bitterness is medium-low, providing enough balance to prevent cloying sweetness. The finish is medium-dry with a lingering toffee and earthy hop aftertaste, devoid of any harsh roasted or burnt grain flavors.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate, providing a soft prickle on the tongue. Alcohol warmth is not perceived, in line with its sessionable strength.
