Heater Allen Brewing Rauchbier Hell

Other Smoked Beer 5.1 º 21 IBU
This collaboration between Heater Allen and Wayfinder delivers a refined interpretation of a Munich Helles infused with the spirit of Bamberg. Modeled after Schlenkerla’s Helles, it showcases a distinctive beechwood smoke character that evokes campfire and savory bacon, seamlessly integrated with the sweet, bready notes of Pilsner malt. The aroma is assertive yet balanced, leading into a flavor profile where clean graininess meets a persistent, smooth smokiness. Despite its aromatic depth, the beer remains exceptionally drinkable with a crisp, bright finish and a subtle spicy noble hop presence, embodying a masterful balance of smoke and traditional lager elegance.
Appearance. Pale gold to deep yellow (SRM 4-6) with brilliant clarity. Features a thick, creamy white head with excellent retention and fine lacing.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity smoke character, reminiscent of beechwood, campfire, and smoked meats. Beneath the smoke lies a delicate, sweet grainy malt aroma and soft floral, spicy noble hop notes. Extremely clean fermentation profile with no esters or diacetyl.
Taste. The initial impression is a balanced interplay of sweet, bready malt and smooth smoke. The smoke flavor is savory and well-integrated, lacking any harsh or phenolic edges. Low bitterness provides just enough structure to support the malt. The finish is remarkably clean, dry, and crisp, with a lingering but pleasant smoky aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with moderate to high carbonation that enhances the crispness. Extremely smooth on the palate with no perceived alcohol warmth or smoke-derived astringency.

Rauchbier Hell was a hit the last time it was out and Kevin (Wayfinder) and Lisa (Heater Alen) decided that since this year pretty much everything has been going into cans, now would be a great time to get this backyard food beer out to the people! Modeled after the famed beer from Schlenkerla brewery in Bamberg Germany, this smoked or “rauch” beer gets it’s smoky flavor from Beechwood-smoked barley from Bamberg. (Weyermann Specialty Malting Company, which is where all of our malt comes from).
