Philandered is a vibrant "jong rood" or young Flanders Red Ale that balances tradition with modern fermentation techniques. Utilizing Philly Sour yeast, it presents a refreshingly drinkable tartness characterized by bright lactic acidity rather than sharp vinegar. An Experimental Hop variety imparts distinct gooseberry notes, which intertwine with high fruit esters of red currant and plum. Specialty malts provide a unique nuttiness and soft toasty foundation, grounding the beer’s complexity. The result is a crisp, wine-like ale with a structured, tannic finish that hints at the future depth of its intended barrel-aged counterparts.
Appearance. Deep burgundy to reddish-brown (14–17 SRM) with good clarity. Features a persistent, very pale tan head with moderate lacing.
Aroma. High intensity of fruity-sour notes. Primary aromas of gooseberry and red fruit leather are supported by a nutty, toasty malt presence. Low levels of peppery phenols and a clean lactic sharpness from the Philly Sour yeast are evident, with no traditional hop aroma.
Taste. Initial impression is a refreshing tartness with a complex fruit profile of gooseberry and black cherry. Moderate toasty malt flavors offer a distinctive nuttiness. The sourness is firm but balanced, lacking harsh acetic acid. It finishes dry and crisp with a lingering wine-like acidity and very low hop bitterness.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a prickly, moderate carbonation. Low to medium astringency provides a structured, wine-like mouthfeel, accompanied by a light, refreshing acidity and no significant alcohol warmth.
