Shouting Into the Void is a formidable Black IPA that balances shadowy depths with vibrant hop energy. The interplay of Simcoe, Citra, Motueka, and Amarillo creates a complex aromatic tapestry of bright citrus, delicate florals, and a resinous boreal forest character. Despite its midnight hue, the malt profile remains refined, offering subtle toasted notes without harsh astringency. The whirlpool hopping ensures a clean, assertive bitterness that cuts through the 8.5% ABV, leading to a dry, lingering finish. It is a brooding yet refreshing take on a Specialty IPA, where dark malts serve as a quiet stage for a loud, modern hop performance.

Appearance. Deep ebony to black (35–40 SRM), appearing nearly opaque in the glass. It supports a persistent, creamy, light tan head with excellent retention and significant lacing. Clarity is brilliant, though the density of color makes it appear solid.

Aroma. High intensity hop aromatics dominate, featuring sharp grapefruit and lime citrus from Citra and Motueka, alongside Simcoe’s distinct pine resin and earthy boreal forest notes. A subtle floral undertone from Amarillo provides lift. The malt presence is low but sophisticated, offering hints of unsweetened cocoa and toasted bread without any acrid or burnt character. Fermentation is clean.

Taste. The initial impression is a burst of resinous pine and citrus zest, immediately followed by a firm, clean bitterness. Malt flavors are supportive rather than dominant, providing a base of light chocolate and toasted grain. The use of Simcoe and Amarillo adds an herbal, woody complexity to the mid-palate. It finishes dry with a lingering hop resin and a touch of roasted grain. The alcohol provides a well-integrated, gentle warmth.

Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, velvety texture that avoids being heavy or viscous. Carbonation is moderate, providing a crispness that enhances the hop bite. There is a light, pleasant alcohol warmth and no perceptible astringency from the dark malts.
