Old Engine Oil is a robust English Porter that captures a unique, viscous character reminiscent of its namesake. Deep notes of dark chocolate and coffee drive the profile, derived from a heavy hand of Roast barley and a high-temperature mash designed for residual body. The addition of oats creates a remarkably smooth, velvety texture. Aromatically, earthy hops like East Kent Goldings and Fuggles provide a classic British counterpoint to the rich, buttered toffee and subtle cherry fruit esters. Despite its thick appearance, the palate remains balanced with a persistent bittersweet finish where the clean bitterness of Galena hops keeps the significant malt sweetness in check.

Appearance. Very dark brown to nearly black (30+ SRM) with deep ruby highlights. Pours with a thick, creamy, tan-colored head that shows excellent retention and leaves consistent lacing. It is nearly opaque with a heavy, viscous pour.

Aroma. High intensity of dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans. Moderate sweetness suggesting buttered toffee and caramel. Low to moderate earthy and slightly floral hop aroma from East Kent Goldings and Fuggles. Faint fruity esters of dark cherry are present, and the roast is smooth rather than acrid.

Taste. Rich initial impression of bittersweet chocolate and toasted malts. Mid-palate reveals layers of coffee, toffee, and a mild roasted graininess. Hop bitterness is moderate, providing enough structure to balance the notable residual sweetness. Earthy and herbal hop flavors are present but secondary. The finish is long and bittersweet with a lingering creamy, roasted character.

Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a notable velvety, creamy texture attributed to the use of oats. Carbonation is moderate. A light, pleasant alcohol warmth is present at 6% ABV. Deceptively smooth and thick with no harsh astringency from the dark grains.
