Appearance. Jet black and opaque (SRM 40+). Topped with a dense, dark tan head with moderate retention. High viscosity is evident as the beer clings to the glass, forming visible legs.
Aroma. High intensity. Complex layers of roasted coffee, dark cocoa, and star anise. Underlying sweetness of molasses and hints of dark plums or raisins are present, alongside a soft, vinous alcohol character and low earthy hop notes.
Taste. Initial impression of rich, dark sweetness with molasses and burnt sugar, followed by intense roasted malt flavors of black coffee and licorice. Medium-high bitterness is assertive, balancing the massive malt bill. The finish is long and roasty with a clean, warming, and slightly bitter aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally velvety with a luscious, chewy texture. Low to moderate carbonation. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present and noticeable but stays well-integrated.
