Hargreaves Hill Chaos of the Universe - Hades - Black IPA
This Black IPA plunges into sensory depths with a striking interplay of dark malts and high-intensity hops. Assertive resin and sharp pine from Columbus and Simcoe hops lead the profile, quickly met by the distinctive blackberry and dark berry notes of the HBC638 experimental variety. The malt character is elegantly restrained, offering a light roast reminiscent of fresh French press coffee and unsweetened cocoa without any harsh ashiness. It balances the aggressive bitterness of an American IPA with a smooth, shadowy malt foundation, finishing dry and clean. This beer is a brooding yet vibrant expression of the style, marrying forest-floor aromatics with subtle roasted depths.
Appearance. Opaque, deep ebony to black (SRM 38) with mahogany highlights at the edges. A persistent, creamy, light tan head provides excellent lacing.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring resinous pine, damp earth, and a sharp, ripe blackberry note. Supporting malt notes of toasted bread and light, cold-brew coffee. Clean fermentation profile with very low fruity esters.
Taste. An initial punch of resinous pine and resin is followed by a unique blackberry mid-palate from the HBC638 hops. Bitterness is firm and assertive (approx. 60-70 IBU) but smooth. The malt provides a supportive layer of dark chocolate and light roast French press coffee. Finishes dry with a lingering resinous and slightly roasty aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, supple texture. Moderate carbonation. Light, well-integrated alcohol warmth at 6% ABV. Devoid of any harsh roasted astringency.
