Balthasar is a robust and festive Doppelbock that bridges the gap between traditional Munich strength and Rhenish Altbier soul. It greets the senses with a rich, caramelly warmth and a soft, velvety texture that reflects its high gravity. While the core is deeply malty and gemütlich, the unique hop profile deviates from the traditional with a distinctive mandarin orange note that enlivens the finish. Brewed for the cold winter months, it balances substantial malt sweetness with a clean fermentation profile, offering a sophisticated interplay of toasted sugars and bright citrus accents. It is a hearty, well-integrated winter specialty.
Appearance. Deep copper to dark brown with prominent ruby highlights. It features excellent clarity and is topped with a large, creamy, persistent off-white head that leaves fine lacing.
Aroma. High intensity malt-forward profile featuring rich caramel, toasted bread, and deep Maillard products. Uniquely for the style, a moderate hop aroma of mandarin orange is present, alongside very low plum-like esters and a subtle, clean alcohol presence.
Taste. The initial impression is soft and deeply malty, dominated by layers of caramel and toasted grain.
