Baron H is a sophisticated Black IPA that marries roasted depth with a vibrant botanical profile. The addition of Earl Grey tea provides a distinctive bergamot zest that threads through the assertive hop bouquet. Highlighting a complex dry hop of Chinook, Idaho 7, and Simcoe, the beer offers intense grapefruit and forest fruit notes, supported by early additions of Herkules, Ekuanot, and Cascade. The dark malt presence is elegantly restrained, offering light chocolate and toast without acridity. This Specialty IPA balances its firm bitterness with the floral, citrusy nuances of the tea, finishing dry with a lingering tea-tannin and resinous snap.
Appearance. Opaque, deep ebony to black (SRM 38) with clear ruby highlights when held to light. Topped by a persistent, dense tan head with excellent lacing.
Aroma. High intensity hop-forward aroma featuring grapefruit, resinous pine, and tropical stone fruit. The Earl Grey leaf infusion contributes a distinctively floral bergamot and zesty citrus note. Low malt aromatics of toasted bread and light cocoa; clean fermentation profile.
Taste. Initial impression of zesty grapefruit and forest fruits followed by a firm, clean bitterness. Hop flavors of resin and citrus zest are prominent. Malt character is supportive, offering smooth dark chocolate and light toast without burnt or ashy astringency. The bergamot from the tea leaves provides a complex, floral mid-palate and a subtle, lingering herbal aftertaste in a dry finish.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Moderate carbonation. Very low alcohol warmth. A faint, pleasant tea-derived tannin presence adds to the dry impression.
