Cumulus presents as a quintessential Hazy IPA, defined by its signature "hop juice" profile and a remarkably soft, pillowy texture derived from the addition of oats and wheat. The aroma is a tropical and citrus explosion, driven by a complex blend of Citra, Simcoe, Amarillo, Centennial, and Kohatu hops. These varieties provide an intense layering of bright grapefruit, pine resin, and stone fruit notes that permeate the palate. With its low perceived bitterness and a plush, medium-full body, this beer emphasizes a lush, fruit-forward experience. The finish is smooth and off-dry, allowing the vibrant hop oils to linger without any harshness.
Appearance. Color is a luminous straw to pale gold (3-5 SRM). It displays a characteristic opaque haze that gives the beer a vibrant, glowing appearance. A dense, white, meringue-like head sits atop with excellent retention, leaving thick lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity aroma dominated by tropical and citrus hop characteristics. Citra and Kohatu contribute vivid notes of passion fruit and lime, while Amarillo and Centennial add layers of orange peel and floral blossoms. A subtle Simcoe presence provides a hint of earthy pine. The malt is understated, offering a clean, bready, and grainy backdrop from the wheat and oats. Fermentation is clean with light fruity esters that complement the hop profile.
Taste. Initial impression is an explosion of "juicy" hop flavors, mirroring the tropical and stone fruit notes of the aroma. Hop bitterness is low to moderate, purposefully restrained to enhance the perception of fruit. The oat and wheat grist provides a supportive, bready malt foundation. The balance is heavily skewed toward hop flavor, yet it remains drinkable with an off-dry finish and no hop burn. Aftertaste is clean with a lingering citrus zest.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full, plush body with a noticeably soft and creamy texture from the flaked grains. Carbonation is moderate, providing a gentle lift. There is no perceived alcohol warmth at 6.3% ABV, and no astringency or harshness.
