Haandbakk is an intricate Norwegian recreation of the Oud Bruin style, achieving great depth through eighteen months of maturation in oak wine barrels. This extended aging imparts a sophisticated vinous character that elegantly complements its robust 8.5% ABV. The sensory profile is defined by a rich bouquet of dark cherries, raisins, and plums, supported by a sturdy malt foundation of caramel and toffee. On the palate, a masterful interplay between dark sugar sweetness and a natural, aged lactic sourness creates a classic sweet-and-sour balance. Subtle notes of chocolate and sherry emerge alongside fine wood tannins, leading to a long, warming, and complex finish.
Appearance. Deep reddish-brown to dark brown in color. Good clarity from long aging. Features an ivory to light tan head with average retention and light lacing.
Aroma. High intensity with a rich malt profile of caramel, toffee, and a hint of chocolate. Pronounced fruity esters reminiscent of raisins, plums, and black cherries. A noticeable but clean lactic sourness is present, accompanied by a lightly nutty, sherry-like oxidation and vinous oak notes.
Taste. Initial impression is malty and sweet, featuring dark caramel and burnt sugar. This is quickly balanced by a medium-high fruitiness of dates and prunes. A refined sourness provides a sweet-and-sour character that becomes more pronounced in the finish. Hop bitterness is restrained and hop flavor is absent, allowing for a malt-forward, complex, and slightly warming aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, somewhat viscous texture. Carbonation is moderate. A noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, with no harsh astringency despite the long barrel aging.
