Il suo nome è la traduzione fiamminga del nome “dragone dorato”. La birra infatti porta questo nome in onore del drago dorato che orna il campanile della città belga di Gand, sede del birrificio.
Si tratta di una Dark Strong Ale rifermentata in bottiglia e che subisce una fermentazione secondaria con lievito di vino che determina un gusto senza pari e che assicura l’evoluzione del gusto a lungo termine. Quindi più invecchia la birra, più aroma ottiene e più pieno diventa il gusto e il colore.
Al naso offre note di malto tostato e caffè. Al palato ha un gusto complesso con note di caramello, malto tostato e cioccolato.
Una perfetta birra da aperitivo o da servire in abbinamento a dessert con cioccolato fondente o uno stufato.

Kortom, het bier is zijn naam waardig.
Voor de nagisting wordt gebruik gemaakt van een wijngist die bepalend is voor de weergaloze smaak en die zorgt voor de langdurige smaakevolutie (= levend bier). Hoe ouder het bier wordt, hoe meer aroma het krijgt en hoe voller de smaak en de kleur worden.
Het is dus zeker de moeite waard om enkele grote flessen bij te houden en te laten rijpen gedurende vele jaren.
Gulden Draak laat zich makkelijk drinken als aperitief, dessert of gewoon als u even tijd maakt om te genieten. Deze “gerstewijn” harmonieert uitstekend bij en in stoofpotjes en bij een Gentse stoverij in het bijzonder. Het geeft ook een meerwaarde aan sauzen bij rood vlees zoals een bordelaise en is ook uitermate geschikt als dessertbier, vooral bij donkere chocolade.

NOSE: Sweet with scents of brown sugar, toffee, alcohol, spices, and malt.
APPEARANCE: Pours a semi-translucent, dark amber color with a huge, fluffy, dirty-tan head that dissipates slowly with nice lacing.
TASTE: Very sweet with flavors of dark fruits, malt, and caramel. As I sip it, I am initially inundated with pure sugar sweetness. But as I let it sit on my tongue and gently slide down the back of my tongue, the other flavors start to take center stage and put on quite the performance!
MOUTHFEEL: Full-bodied with a creamy texture and slightly-higher-than-average carbonation.
