Grizzly Brewing Sweet Bitterness is an English Porter that masterfully balances a complex, deep malt bill with resinous highlights. The foundation of Munich and Amber Aromatic malts provides a robust toasted bread crust character, while Caramunich II adds layers of rich caramel and toffee. This sweetness is countered by the mild chocolate and espresso notes of Carafa II and Carafa III. A distinct, piney hop presence from Chinook emerges on the mid-palate, providing a firm counter-bitterness that cleanses the palate. Fermented cleanly with US05 yeast, the finish remains crisp and malt-forward, showcasing a sophisticated interplay between dark grain depth and American hop assertiveness.
Appearance. Deep, dark brown with brilliant ruby highlights when held to the light. Crowned by a moderate, creamy light tan head with fair to good retention and light lacing on the glass.
Aroma. Moderate intensity featuring bready and toasty Munich malt notes, followed by dark chocolate and a hint of nutty toffee. A subtle, clean pine and earthy hop character is present, with very low fruity esters.
Taste. Initial flavors of toasted bread and caramel-dipped nuts transition into a moderate roasted chocolate and mild coffee character. The bitterness is moderate and well-defined, driven by resinous hop notes that balance the sweetness of the specialty malts. The finish is medium-dry with a lingering note of cocoa and a clean, brief hop resin aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light to medium body with moderate carbonation. Texture is smooth and slightly creamy, lacking any harsh astringency from the dark grains. No alcohol warmth is perceived at this strength.
