This Foreign Extra Stout presents a complex, multi-layered profile driven by a trio of roasted malts and a distinct addition of blackstrap molasses. Initial sensory impressions lead with bittersweet chocolate and dark fruit, reminiscent of plums or raisins. The addition of flaked oats provides a smooth, substantial texture that balances the assertive espresso-like roast. Subtle rum-like notes emerge from the fermentation and molasses, adding depth without being overwhelming. Despite its bold 7.8% ABV, the beer remains remarkably approachable, finishing with a moderately dry, lingering roasted grain character and a firm, earthy bitterness that defines the style.
Appearance. Opaque, jet black (SRM 40). Pours with a large, creamy tan head that demonstrates excellent retention and leaves consistent lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity aroma dominated by deep roasted grains, espresso, and bittersweet chocolate. Moderate dark fruit esters suggest black cherry and dried plum. Distinctive notes of blackstrap molasses and a faint, clean rum-like alcohol presence add complexity. Low earthy hop notes are present in the background.
Taste. Bold initial impression of dark roasted malts, offering flavors of unsweetened cocoa and strong espresso. The mid-palate reveals dark fruit and a rich molasses sweetness that is quickly tempered by medium-high bitterness. The finish is moderately dry and clean, leaving a lingering toasted grain and bittersweet chocolate aftertaste without any harsh burnt astringency.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a notable silkiness and creaminess from the flaked oats. Moderate carbonation provides a slight lift to the palate. A subtle, pleasant alcohol warmth is felt in the throat, well-integrated and smooth.
