Metal Unicorn is a striking Black IPA that masterfully balances deep, roasted malt complexity with an aggressive, modern hop profile. Hand-selected dark malts provide a smooth, non-acrid foundation of chocolate, coffee, and rich caramel. This dark backdrop is elevated by a massive infusion of Ahhhroma™, Idaho 7, Chinook, and Styrian Dragon hops. These varieties unleash a complex bouquet of mango, papaya, and black currant that intermingles with the roasted base. The result is a seamless blend where toffee and berry flavors collide with tropical fruit, finishing with the crisp, resinous bitterness and dry character expected of a well-crafted Specialty IPA.
Appearance. Dark brown to nearly black in color (SRM 32–40). It features a persistent, creamy light tan head with excellent retention and lacing. While the beer is clear, its deep color makes it appear essentially opaque.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring vibrant mango, papaya, and black currant from the Idaho 7 and Styrian Dragon additions. This fruitiness is grounded by resinous pine from the Chinook and a supportive, moderate malt character of light chocolate, coffee, and toasted caramel. The fermentation profile is clean with no significant esters.
Taste. A hop-forward initial impression of tropical fruit and black currant is followed by restrained chocolate and coffee flavors that avoid any burnt or ashy harshness. Medium-high hop bitterness provides a firm structure, while light toffee and caramel notes add depth without excessive sweetness. The finish is dry and clean with a lingering resinous and slightly roasted aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Smooth, medium-bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. A light, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, complemented by a subtle creaminess from the dark malt structure. It lacks any grain-derived astringency.
