Hail Citra is an assertive Double IPA that centers its sensory profile on the intense, multi-faceted Citra hop. A powerful aromatic blast of grapefruit, passion fruit, and lime zest dominates the senses, reflecting the tropical inspiration mentioned by the brewer. Beneath this hop intensity, a clean, neutral malt base provides a lean platform, allowing the hops to shine without the weight of heavy caramel or residual sugars. The 8.3% alcohol is well-integrated, lending a gentle warmth that supports the dry, crisp finish. Bracing bitterness and a lingering resinous aftertaste complete this bold expression of hop worship.
Appearance. Gold to deep gold (7-9 SRM) with a slight, modern haze. Features a moderate-sized, persistent white head with excellent lacing.
Aroma. Intensity is high, featuring prominent tropical fruit and citrus notes of mango, passion fruit, and grapefruit peel driven by the Citra hops. A very low, neutral grainy malt character persists in the background with a clean fermentation profile and a hint of smooth alcohol.
Taste. Strong and complex hop flavors of lychee, melon, and citrus zest. Bitterness is high but remains smooth rather than harsh. The malt character is low and unobtrusive, offering a soft, crackery support. It finishes very dry with a long, lingering hoppy bitterness that remains clean on the palate.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly oily texture. Carbonation is medium-high. A restrained, smooth alcohol warmth is present, reflecting the 8.3% ABV without being solventy or hot.
