Blitzen is a vibrant Christmas Kriek-style sour that captures the essence of festive indulgence in a highly sessionable 3.4% ABV frame. Kettle-soured for up to three days, it delivers a sharp, puckering lactic tartness that serves as a sharp canvas for overwhelming mountains of cherry. The sensory experience is dominated by bright, succulent stone fruit notes, where a subtle, jammy cherry sweetness weaves through an aggressively crisp, acidic backbone. It finishes clean and incredibly refreshing, offering a lively, fruit-forward alternative for holiday celebrations without the weight or alcohol warmth of traditional winter warmers.
Appearance. Deep ruby red to vibrant crimson with a slight haze. Topped with a moderate, pink-tinted head that has moderate to low retention, leaving light lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity aromatics of fresh, tart cherries and cherry skin. A clean, sharp lactic acidity is prominent, lacking funky Brettanomyces character but offering a bright, lemony zing. Malt character is virtually undetectable behind the fruit.
Taste. Immediate puckering tartness from the kettle souring process. Intense cherry flavors range from bright red fruit to slightly deeper, jammy notes. A hint of residual cherry sweetness balances the sharp acidity, though the finish is decidedly dry and tart. Hop bitterness and flavor are absent, and the fermentation character is very clean.
Mouthfeel. Light-bodied and effervescent with high carbonation. A noticeable acidic prickle on the tongue leads to a crisp, refreshing mouthfeel with a slight, fruit-derived tannin and astringency.
