Garage Project Thor’s Cup

Thor’s Cup is a dark, complex interpretation of a Saison, drawing deep influence from Norwegian farmhouse traditions. A base of dark malts provides a robust canvas for the dual Kveik cultures of Voss and Hornindal, which impart vibrant tropical esters and a characteristic tart edge. The addition of fresh juniper branches in the mash introduces a distinctive resinous and herbal backbone, while a measured use of beech smoked malt weaves a subtle, earthy veil across the sensory profile. The result is a high-gravity ale where rustic smoke, piney resin, and dark grain complexity converge into a remarkably dry, effervescent finish.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark brown with ruby highlights; topped by a dense, long-lasting tan head with excellent lacing. Clarity is slightly hazy due to the Kveik yeast and traditional mashing techniques.
Aroma. High aromatic intensity featuring a blend of orange peel and stone fruit from the Kveik cultures, underpinned by toasted bread and light chocolate from dark malts. Distinctive notes of resinous juniper and a delicate, savory wisp of beech smoke complement the spicy fermentation profile.
Taste. Complex layers of dark grain, subtle cocoa, and toasted malt are met by a tart, fruity acidity. Juniper provides a woody, gin-like bitterness that merges with continental hop character. The fermentation brings notes of dried fruit and black pepper, finishing very dry with a lingering resinous and slightly smoky aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a slight creaminess that belies its high attenuation. High carbonation provides an effervescent, prickly sensation on the tongue. A moderate, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, reflecting its strength.

It's a tricky business, getting into drinking competitions with giants. Expect the unexpected. Thor's Cup, inspired by the traditional farmhouse ale that has been made in Norway for centuries, using Kveik yeast (pronounced kwike in English). Brewed using fresh juniper branches in the mash and a touch of beech smoked malt, this beer's unique flavour comes from two mixed Kveik cultures collected from traditional brewers in Voss and Hornindal, and brought back to New Zealand. Dark malts vie with tart yeast driven complexity and subtle hints of smoke and resin in a beer that can truly claim to be unique. Drink deep from the cup, but keep your wits about you.
