Garage Project

Iron Pig is a robust American Stout that celebrates its New Zealand roots with a deep, obsidian-like presentation. The use of premium Canterbury malt and heavily roasted barley creates a decadent foundation of bittersweet chocolate, fresh-ground coffee, and toasted nuts. A deliberate addition of Green Bullet hops provides a clean, firm bitterness and subtle herbal, piney accents that cut through the malt richness. This stout balances its roasted intensity with a velvety texture, finishing with a satisfying dryness and a lingering echo of dark cocoa. It captures the spirit of the style with distinct Pacific character and a structured, full-flavored profile.

Appearance. Jet black and opaque (SRM 40). Features a large, persistent light tan head with excellent retention and thick lacing.

Aroma. High intensity roast-forward aroma with dominant notes of espresso and dark chocolate. Supporting nuances of toasted walnuts and a medium-low hop character showing herbal and slightly spicy Green Bullet traits. Clean fermentation with no perceptible esters.

Taste. Initial impression is rich and roasted, following through with bittersweet chocolate and charred coffee beans. Medium-high bitterness is assertive but balanced by the malt density. Hop flavors are moderate, leaning toward pine and earthiness. Finishes dry and clean with a lingering cocoa powder aftertaste.

Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, creamy texture. Moderate carbonation. Very light, well-integrated alcohol warmth with a slight, pleasant roast-derived astringency that enhances the dry finish.

When we started out we were tiny. Garage Project wasn't even micro brewing… it was a truly nano brewery.
After nine years of working in breweries with equipment 100 times bigger it was quite a change to downsize to a fifty litre brew kit. But what we lacked in size we more than made up for in agility and the ability to experiment.
When you’re brewing on such a small scale you can afford to take risks. That suited us. We wanted to try something new.
Five years have passed and we’ve grown, but that same ethos still shapes how we do things at the Garage. Whether we’re brewing 50 litres or 2000, we’re still here to take some risks, to have a bit of fun and to try something new.
Way back in the day, when we were just starting out, we wrote a little blurb about each other to shed some light on who we are, and what lead us down the path of starting a brewery in Wellington, (if you’ve ever written your own bio, you’ll know how hard it can be!).
