Garage Project’s Garbage Stout is a decadent, high-gravity Imperial Stout that masterfully navigates the boundary between sensory mayhem and harmony. A complex base of nine types of malted barley, oats, and rye provides a velvety, viscous foundation for an onslaught of comfort-food additions. Bold aromas of coffee and cacao nibs lead, followed by the sweet, nutty nuance of toasted coconut, hazelnut, and vanilla. On the palate, the sweetness of marshmallows and raisins is balanced by a subtle savory hint from pretzels and potato crisps. This massive beer finishes with a lingering, boozy warmth and a deep, roasty complexity that demands slow contemplation.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40 SRM). Pours with a thick, persistent deep tan head that leaves significant lacing. High viscosity is evident through slow-moving legs on the glass.
Aroma. Intense and multi-layered. Strong notes of roasted coffee and dark chocolate dominate, supported by rich hazelnut and toasted coconut. Moderate esters of dried raisins and plums mingle with sweet vanilla and marshmallow scents. Low earthy tea notes provide a subtle herbal counterpoint to the decadent malt profile.
Taste. Initially explosive with bittersweet chocolate and espresso flavors. The mid-palate reveals a complex interplay of sweet vanilla and coconut against a backdrop of toasted rye and bready malts. Distinctive savory notes from pretzels and potato crisps provide a unique balance to the rich marshmallow sweetness. High bitterness from both roast and hops is well-integrated. Mouthfeel. Full to very full-bodied with a thick, chewy, and velvety texture enhanced by the addition of oats and rye. Low to moderate carbonation. Noticeable but smooth alcohol warmth reflects the high gravity without being sharp or solventy.
