Obscure Novice is a decadent take on the classic English Porter, elevated by a rich infusion of toasted hazelnuts. A deep brown pour reveals inviting aromas of milk chocolate, sweet English caramel, and a prominent, natural hazelnut character. On the palate, the sweet, nutty essence merges seamlessly with bready, biscuity malts and a soft, earthy hop bitterness. Despite its robust seven percent alcohol strength, it remains highly approachable, offering a subtle, warming alcohol presence that enhances the smooth, creamy mouthfeel. The finish is balanced and semi-sweet, leaving a lingering impression of roasted praline and cocoa.

Appearance. Dark brown in color with deep ruby highlights. Crowned by a moderate, creamy, light tan head with good retention and gentle lacing. Clear, though nearly opaque.

Aroma. Moderately high intensity. Dominated by a rich, natural roasted hazelnut aroma, closely followed by sweet milk chocolate, caramel, and toasty, bready malt. Low earthy hop aroma is present in the background, alongside subtle dark fruit esters of plum and raisin.

Taste. An initial impression of sweet toasted hazelnut and milk chocolate. The mid-palate features bready and biscuity malt complexity with caramel and toffee notes. Mild earthy hop flavor and a low-to-moderate hop bitterness balance the rich malt and hazelnut sweetness. Finishes semi-sweet and smooth with a lingering, pleasant aftertaste of chocolate-covered nuts, entirely free of harsh or burnt roast character.

Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, moderately creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate. Presents a light, gentle alcohol warmth that is well-integrated and never harsh, with no astringency.
