Fyne Ales Origins - Clàr

Old Ale 9.7 º
This collaboration with Springbank distillery is a masterful homage to 19th-century British brewing, specifically the rustic, aged complexity of historical Old Ale. At 9.7% ABV, it presents a deep, contemplative sensory profile where rich layers of treacle, molasses, and dark toffee from the malt bill meet the sophisticated funk of Brettanomyces. The Springbank whisky cask influence introduces whispers of coastal peat, vanilla, and oak, harmonizing with vinous notes of sherry and dried plum. This is a bold, warming liquid that balances luscious malt weight with a leather-like dryness and a persistent, complex finish reminiscent of Gale's Prize Old Ale.
Appearance. Deep reddish-brown with mahogany highlights (approx. 20 SRM). Topped by a thin, persistent light-tan head with moderate lacing. Displays slight haziness characteristic of extended aging and wild fermentation.
Aroma. High intensity and profoundly complex. Deep aromas of black cherry, raisin, and molasses lead, followed by distinct Brettanomyces-derived notes of leather and earthy funk. The Springbank influence adds a subtle wisp of peat smoke and weathered oak, while oxidative notes suggest fine old Port.
Taste. A luscious initial impression of caramel and dark fruit is quickly joined by a vinous acidity and complex oxidation. Flavors of nutty malt, burnt sugar, and dried figs dominate the mid-palate. Hop bitterness is moderate but firm enough to provide balance against the 9.7% ABV. The finish is long and dry, showcasing a lingering interplay of oak tannins, earthy leather, and warming alcohol.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full to full body with a chewy, substantial texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, enhancing the velvety feel. A significant, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, accompanied by a light tannic astringency from the spirit casks.
