Fyne Ales Highlander
Highlander is a foundational Scottish Light that punches above its weight with a robust bittersweet profile. The sensory experience is defined by a rich foundation of Caramel malt, offering aromas of toasted bread and sugary toffee. The addition of Mount Hood and Celeia hops introduces a distinctive citrus edge, specifically a bright hint of lemon, which cuts through the malty sweetness. On the palate, the initial caramel richness transitions into soft citrus notes, culminating in a firm, clean bitter finish that balances the malt-forward heritage of this traditional amber ale, delivering a complex yet accessible drinking experience.
Appearance. SRM 18-24. Deep dark amber to copper with ruby highlights. Brilliant clarity. Features a low to moderate, creamy off-white head with good retention and light lacing.
Aroma. Moderate intensity featuring dominant caramel and toffee malt notes with a light toasty quality reminiscent of toasted breadcrumbs. A subtle but clear citrus presence, specifically a hint of lemon, arises from the hop character. Clean fermentation profile with very low pome fruit esters and no diacetyl.
Taste. Initial impression is of bready, toasted malt and rich caramel overtones. Mid-palate reveals soft citrus and lemon flavors that lead into a noticeable hop bitterness that is higher than typical for the style. The finish is bittersweet with a lingering roasty dryness and a clean, malty aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body, providing a more substantial mouthfeel than typical for the style. Moderate carbonation with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Very light alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated.
