Shatter is a revitalized expression of the historic Polish Grodziskie style, delivering a vibrant sensory experience despite its sessionable 2.8% ABV. The profile is dominated by the distinct aroma of oak-smoked wheat malt, offering clean, campfire-like notes without harshness. On the palate, a crisp, grainy malt backbone meets a surprisingly firm bitterness that cuts through the delicate smoke. Its effervescent carbonation provides a prickly, refreshing mouthfeel, leading into a bone-dry, clean finish. This pale, straw-colored ale balances traditional wood-smoke character with a modern focus on drinkability, making it an exceptionally light yet flavorful example of smoked beer.
Appearance. Pale straw to light gold (2–3 SRM). Topped by a dense, voluminous, snow-white head with excellent retention and delicate lacing. Brilliantly clear with visible effervescence.
Aroma. Moderate intensity oak smoke, characterized by clean wood-fire and subtle forest notes. Low grainy-sweet wheat malt sits in the background. Hop aroma is very low to absent, though faint herbal notes may persist. Clean fermentation profile with no esters or phenols beyond the smoke.
Taste. Immediate clean oak smoke flavor, well-integrated with a light, bready wheat malt foundation. Bitterness is moderate to firm, providing a crisp counterpoint to the smoke. The balance is decidedly bitter and dry. Hop flavor is minimal, leaning toward herbal. The finish is short, clean, and highly refreshing without any lingering harshness.
Mouthfeel. Very light body with a prickly, high carbonation that enhances the perceived crispness. No alcohol warmth is present. Smooth and lean, devoid of astringency or heavy oils from the smoke.
